Main topics

Measuring the moisture in the air and soil of a certain area is extremely important for an accurate and reliable way of growing plants and crops, there are a variety of uses a moisture meter can be used and a variety of different types of moisture meters available. We at ARRK North America Inc. can help design and produce the necessary parts for these types of products, we have a variety of processes to make everything you can imagine.

In our End-to-End service, we are ready to provide rapid prototyping, Low Volume Production, Urethane Casting, 3D printing, CNC machining, Tooling, and Injection Molding.

MEASURING HUMIDITY IS PART OF RELIABLE DATA TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT WHEN GROWING PLANTS AND CROPS

Humidity is one of the most important aspects in the growth of a plant, when the conditions of the soil are too humid, it may promote the growth of dangerous bacteria and mold that could be harmful to the plant, and it could also lead to the roots and crown to rot.

A humid environment may also bring the presence of fungus, insects (and their larvae), and pests, neither of which are desired in the terrain. If the soil and air are not moist enough, then that would bring immediate problems like an inability for the plants to grow, and eventually, they would dry out.

Here is when having a soil moisture meter can help.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE MOISTURE SENSORS IN THE AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY

The most important factors in a moisture sensor are accuracy, ease of use, cost, durability, and compatibility with different types of soil. A moisture meter should be accurate enough to measure changes in soil moisture levels within a few percent, it should be easy to operate so it doesn’t require constant attention, also it should be durable enough to withstand regular use, including being dropped into the ground, and it should be compatible with the type of soil you’re measuring.

The most common type of moisture meter is the “wet/dry bulb” style. A typical wet/dry bulb will measure both relative humidity (RH) and temperature, it may also include a thermistor for measuring the ambient air temperature; some units also include a hygrometer to measure the dew point.

Even though the “wet/dry bulb” meter is the most common one, there are many options that could be made, mainly because these sensors either measure volumetric water content or measure soil tension when placed in the soil; they vary also on the quality and material of each part, so some may be more resistant to hits, but others would be more accurate. The sensor types include:

  • Gypsum blocks
  • Tension meters
  • Volumetric and neutron probes
  • Capacitance
